Context,
influences and initial experiments

 Images I-III ( left):

Responding to my research I mapped out my contextual and artistic influences in a clear format in order to not only more easily timeline my project and what I wished to explore, but also to provide a general groundwork that I could refer back to throughout project development.

IV-VII(Right):

Example of the more fine art focussed pathway I initially intended to take my projects down, demonstrating responses to and explorations of artists I drew from. I intended to delve into youth subcultures and attempt to capture the attidutes and character of different groups. Demonstrated here are some experiments into depicting club kids and punks with different illustration styles. Combining the influence of Derek Ridgers and Elizabeth Peyton to create portrait-based character studies of young people with a strong sense of identity.

Interviews

After conducting my initial experiments I decided to interview figures I knew of who represented some form of  'other' to peers in their field, namely band HMLTD and Westwood model Pamela Rook (who regretably accepted interview but declined to let me physically document it). Through these interviews i wanted to gain insight on these peoples views on expression and it's potential for both liberation and harm.

After conducting my interviews i went on to produce more experimental illustrations, ranging from drawing and painting on opposite sides of Acetate, to combining pencil, watercolour and ink. Here are some examples of my developments

Textiles experiments

Pictured to the left are some examples of how my growing interest in vivienne westwoods work and the punk movement began my shift into fashion and textiles work, starting with combining illustrations with fabric collages to create pieces reminiscent of fashion design illustration. these pieces would lead me to start planning my leap into garment design.

Screen print designs

Initial sketches and final drafts of Westwood and Reid inspired Political satire designs, as well as some garment drafts. Produced at the time of the 2019 election i wanted  to use humour to create more widley accesible designs that while initially eye catching are still making a point.

First Garments

Here you see photographs of my first sewing attempts, the only of my pieces sewn by hand, created from some of the leftover fabric at the college and a bin bag. I printed my designs and after seeing the result begun design on my final garments.

Final piece draft
sketches

Pictured are some brief descriptions of and drafts for what would become final pieces, One being a garment I just printed on, another being a Garment i acquired and dramatically altered and the third being created totally from scratch.

Final photos and contact sheet

Contact sheet and some larger images demonstrating the some of the outcomes of my final prints and garment designs, as well as close up scans of a patch embroidered with text and designs on the final shirt designed from scratch.
